Welcome to DBUG:

the Bicycle User Group based at Durham University’s campuses in the city of Durham. If you live or cycle in Durham, please join up! Our members are also represented in the Durham City Cycling Forum organised by the County Council, and in other local cycle campaigns.

There is a separate Bicycle User Group at Queen’s Campus.

Monthly meeting

Under normal circumstances DBUG holds a monthly meeting, on the first Thursday of each month from 12:30 to 13:30, in the Calman Learning Centre cafĂ© on the Lower Mountjoy Campus. We discuss anything cycle-related: rides, bike shops, kit and maintenance, cycle parking, infrastructure and campaigns. Do come along! We will usually have something cycle-related, like a bike helmet or a pannier, on view to identify us, plus a DBUG logo.

Please be aware that during the Covid-19 pandemia our meetings have moved online.

Joining us

The main way University members currently sign up for membership of DBUG is by joining our teams channel.

Cyclescape

Cyclescape is a social media style site for cycle campaigning. There is an area in Cyclescape where people can discuss Durham cycle infrastructure problems and possible solutions. Usually any planning applications or other Council developments will be recorded here and can be discussed.

Anyone can join Cyclescape: you do not have to be a member of the University.

Campaign papers

In the last year DBUG has started making submissions to the County Council on a range of topics from the forthcoming County Plan to individual planning applications (mainly regarding student accommodation). While the University has done quite a bit recently to improve facilities for cycling by providing more and better cycle racks, the County Council has to play a major role in making the roads safer and more friendly for cycling.
